Guardiola thanks Bayern stars after Porto rout

The former Barcelona coach was thrilled with the reaction of his side in the quarter-final second leg - but warned fans not to expect such victories every week

Pep Guardiola Thomas Muller Philipp Lahm Thiago Mario Gotze Bayern Munich Porto Champions League 210415Pep Guardiola thanked his Bayern Munich players after they bounced back from their surprise first-leg defeat to crush Porto and secure a place in the Champions League semi-finals.

Bayern were widely criticized for the manner of their 3-1 defeat at the Estadio do Dragao last Wednesday but produced the perfect response to win the return 6-1 at the Allianz Arena and coast through 7-4 on aggregate.

The tie was effectively over by half-time after goals from Thiago Alcantara, Jerome Boateng, Thomas Muller and a double from Robert Lewandowski put the hosts in complete control.

Jackson Martinez pulled one back for Porto but Xabi Alonso had the final say with a late free kick.

"That was very good," Guardiola told Sky. "We played very well in the first half, not so good in the second. I can only thank the players, the first 45 minutes was the reaction after the match in Porto.

"I am lucky to coach these great players but if people think we can win every match [like that] then they have to look for a new coach.

"Even after the game in Porto I had the feeling that we could make it. You always make up the difference in your head. I always try to analyse our opponents. It was not such a big surprise how they played in Porto. They have a very good team, but today they were not able to reach their level.

"I don't care too much who our next opponents will be. We will try our best whether it is Real, Barça, Atlético, Juventus or Monaco, that doesn't matter."

The win maintained Guardiola's record of having qualified for the semi-finals of Europe's elite club competition in each of his six years in management.

He achieved it four times with Barcelona and now twice at Bayern.

Messi reaches 400 goals for Barcelona

The Argentine's strike against Valencia took him to another milestone for the Catalan club in only his 471st competitive match in Blaugrana colours

Cartoon of the Day: Messi 400 04112015Lionel Messi has reached 400 goals for Barcelona following his strike in the Liga clash at home to Valencia on Saturday.

The Argentine attacker struck in the dying seconds to claim his latest landmark, which he has achieved in only 471 competitive matches for the Blaugrana.

Messi, still only 27, netted his first for Barca in 2005 against Albacete at Camp Nou and has since gone on to break most of the game's goalscoring records.

All-time top scorer for Barca, the Rosario-born forward also leads the goal charts in the Champions League and La Liga, while he is closing in on Gabriel Batistuta's 56 strikes for Argentina.

His goal against Valencia means he now has 46 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions this term, while he has closed to within three of Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Pichichi prize.

Pres. Jonathan breaks silence, speaks on why he conceded defeat

President Jonathan has given his reason for conceding defeat to President elect, Gen Buhari during the March 28th Presidential election. The President said he decided to concede to avoid a collective tragedy. He said there has to be a nation before any personal ambition can be fulfilled and that for him, what comes first is the nation before ambition. Pres Jonathan said this when he received the new French Ambassador to Nigeria, Denis Guaer (pictured left) at the state house yesterday April 16th.
"Since I assumed duty, I have been involved in quelling political crises in some African countries and I know what they passed through and what some are still going through. If you scuttle a system for personal ambition, it becomes a collective tragedy. You need to have a nation before you can have an ambition. It should always be the nation first. You don’t have to scuttle national progress for personal ambition. Democracy has to be nurtured to grow. Strong democratic institutions are the backbone and future of our democracy. They must be protected and nurtured. As for me, as a matter of principle, it is always the nation first" he said.

The Kidnapped Orekoya Kids Were Found N»ked In A Bag After Ransom Was Paid...read the full details of what transpired

The Lawanson Road, Itire abode of the Orekoyas, whose three children were kidnapped by a housemaid last Wednesday, 24 hours after she was employed, became a Mecca of sorts yesterday, following news of their discovery.

The children, Demola, 6; Adedamola, 4, and Aderomola, 11 months, were reportedly found in an uncompleted building in Shasha area of Akowonjo, Lagos, Tuesday night, after an undisclosed ransom was paid into an account.
According to their maternal grandfather, Senior Apostle Abraham Adekunle, the children were found naked inside a bag. No arrest has, however, been made.
The abductors, as gathered, had sent an account number of an undisclosed bank to the Orekoyas.
The children, who had been ravaged by mosquitoes, were immediately taken to police hospital, Ikeja.
When Vanguard visited the Orekoya's home yesterday, the children and their parents were yet to arrive from the hospital. Their grandfather, Senior Apostle Adekunle, described the eight days of his grandchildren's disappearance as one of the worst challenges he had faced in his 67 years of existence.

Grandfather's story

According to him, "these eight days have been days of unrest for every member of my family.
"It all started after my daughter, Adebisi Orekoya, applied for a nanny through OLX (an online sales portal). On Monday (last week) one lady, who identified herself as Mary Akinloye, came for the job.
"My daughter took her to her place of work to introduce to her colleagues. Next day, Tuesday, she resumed work. But on Wednesday, she took my three grandchildren, leaving Michael, the eldest, a boarder who was on holiday, with information that she was going to get something.
"When Michael did not see Mary and his siblings, he contacted his mother by  phone. My daughter in turn called her husband, who had to cut short his trip to Ibadan and return home.
"We went to Surulere division and Area 'F' to incident the case. Efforts to reach Mary on her phone proved abortive, as it was switched off. But she called next day to say she was with the children and demanded for ransom of N15 million.
"Since then we have been running from pillar to post looking for how to raise the money. Public-spirited Nigerians, family members and friends contributed.
"Aside that, we did not relent in prayers. There was no church around this area that I did not visit for prayers. In fact, in one of the prayer sessions, prophesy came that we would find the children today (yesterday).
"I have nothing else to say than to thank God for sparing the lives of my grandchildren."
Also, elder sister to Mr. Lere Orekoya, Mrs Adesunbo Alabi, stated that when news of the disappearance of her nephews reached her, it was like a dream.
"At first , it seemed like a home theatre movie. I never believed until I came and saw my brother's wife crying. I really appreciate my brother's courage during this period because he encouraged us not to cry, that anything that happens to one in life is for a purpose.
"My joy knows no bounds today because the abductors demanded for money, where other victims were killed."

Hospitalized
When Vanguard visited the hospital , Mr. Orekoya was seen rocking Aderomola, the youngest child, to sleep with a lullaby: Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream.
While Aderomola was on drip, the other two were playing.
The children described the kidnappers' hideout as their new home, saying Mary cooked the meal they ate.
Efforts to get their parents' reaction, yesterday, initially proved abortive as they said it was not a day for explanation.
Mr. Orekoya, however, said the family would brief the press at their home today.
After much persuasion, he simply stated that the rescue of his children was an indication that prayers worked.
"In one word, I will say that prayer works. We are happy that they are alive and well," he said.

OLX response
After days of silence from OLX, the online sales portal, where Mrs Adebisi Orekoya, applied for a nanny through an advert, finally responded by describing the situation as unfortunate.
OLX Country Manager, Lola Masha, in an online statement, yesterday, said: "OLX is an online classified site that brings buyers and sellers together to promote trade.
"We take steps to moderate and review all adverts, but we do not participate in the negotiations between buyers and sellers.
"Transactions are performed directly between both parties. In all our marketing campaign, we continuously urge our users to take necessary precautionary checks when using OLX.
"We sincerely hope that the three kids are returned safely to their loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we will provide all help within our capacity to facilitate the quick reunion of the children with their family.
"We continue to innovate and improve our review process with tighter measures that would help to minimize future occurrence of negative incidents.
"We also need our users to help us kick out bad players and ask them to report any dubious activity or user on the site for immediate action."

'I cannot promise that we can find them' - Buhari

President-elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari says his incoming government cannot promise the return of missing Chibok girls but that they would do everything within their power to secure their return. He said this in a statement he released today April 13th to commemorate one year of the girls’ abduction.
Read statement below…
Today is a time to reflect on the pain and suffering of the victims, their friends and families. Our thoughts and prayers, and that of the whole Nigerian Nation, are with you today. I want to assure all of them, and particularly the parents, that when my new Administration takes office at the end of May, we will do everything we can to defeat Boko Haram. We will act differently from the Government we replace: we hear the anguish of our citizens and intend to respond accordingly.
This new approach must also begin with honesty. We do not know if the Chibok girls can be rescued. Their whereabouts remain unknown. As much as I wish to, I cannot promise that we can find them. But I say to every parent, family member and friend of the children that my Government will do everything in its power to bring them home. What I can pledge, with absolute certainty, is that starting on the first day of my Administration Boko Haram will know the strength of our collective will and commitment to rid this nation of terror, and bring back peace and normalcy to all the affected areas. Boko Haram” means “Western Education is Sinful”. When they are defeated militarily, as they will be, we will ensure our citizens in the affected areas have improved educational opportunities as a direct counterbalance to Boko Haram’s twisted ideology.
In particular we will educate ever more young girls ensuring they are empowered as citizens of Nigeria. Let us use this anniversary to remind each other that the attack on Chibok was an attack on the dreams and aspirations of our young people. We stand united in our pledge to resist terror in Nigeria– not just through military means but also through the power of opportunity and the hope of a better future for all”.
